I use these works to grapple with a deep sense of loss\u2014of innumerable species, of habitat, of ice, and most pointedly, of global stability\u2014at this major turning point in our history.<\/p>\n<p>Using the visual language of <em>vanitas<\/em> paintings\u2014visual homages to Dutch and Flemish <em>memento mori<\/em>\u2014I create still lifes, using real flowers and fruit, among other objects representing transience and mortality.
