THE RANGERSOME MUSEUMGOER’S GUIDE TO POLAR TAXIDERMY

“…and then of course, there’s the ubiquitous herd of taxidermized animals,” I wrote in my field journal about a visit to one of several museums in the Norwegian Arctic. After having seen living seals, birds, bears, and foxes so elusively spread out over distances of snow and ice, it was almost overwhelming to see so many species in one room. The more collections of stuffed beasts I saw—some crammed, toppled or piled on one another; some carefully composed within elaborate dioramas—the more fascinated I became by them. I tried to chronicle the displays in all their varied characters.
