Transfixed is an ongoing series of paintings and drawings in which I attempt to address climate change through metaphor. I use these works to grapple with a deep sense of loss—of innumerable species, of habitat, of ice, and most pointedly, of global stability—at this major turning point in our history.
Using the visual language of vanitas paintings—visual homages to Dutch and Flemish memento mori—I create still lifes, using real flowers and fruit, among other objects representing transience and mortality. I transfix the objects in ice, and depict them in the process of thawing and melting.
